PAR output refers to the amount of Photosynthetically Active Radiation (PAR) emitted by an LED grow light. PAR is a measure of the light in the 400 to 700 nanometer range that plants use for photosynthesis. PAR output is expressed in units of micromoles per square meter per second (μmol/m²/s). A higher PAR output means that the light is emitting more usable light for plant growth. In the context of LED grow lights, PAR output is an important factor to consider when selecting a grow light, as it directly affects the growth and yield of plants.

NOTE: PAR is not a measurement unit like feet, inches, or kilos. Rather, it defines the types of light needed to support photosynthesis. The amount and spectral light quality of PAR light are important metrics to focus on.

PPFD measures the amount of PAR that actually arrives at the plants or in other words the number of photosynthetically active photons that fall on a given surface each second.

LED grow lights emit light in specific spectral ranges to provide the optimal light spectrum for plant growth. The spectral output of an LED grow light is usually represented as a graph, which shows the distribution of light intensity at different wavelengths. The exact spectral output of an LED grow light will vary depending on the manufacturer and the type of plant being grown, but typically the most important spectral ranges for plant growth are the red and blue regions of the spectrum. Top-quality LED grow lights use UV and Far-red chips too, which are the most expensive among them.

• UV light (380 – 450 nanometer range): slows growth and enhances trichomes production. UV light does drive photosynthesis and might also trigger cannabinoid synthesis and potentially reduce disease.
• Blue light (450 – 495 nanometer range): reduces cell expansion, thus plants get shorter and reduce leaf expansion. This light range is essential for vegetative growth.
• Green light (495 – 570 nanometer range): penetrates leaves and facilitates human vision. Green wavelengths penetrate deep in the leaf and are absorbed by certain plant pigments which benefit the plant.
• Red light (620 – 700 nanometer range): chlorophyll strongly absorbs red light, thus it is effective at photosynthesis and promoting flowering and fruiting.
• Far red (700 – 800 nanometer range): enhances cell expansion, plants stretch.

LED grow light efficacy refers to the amount of light energy converted into plant-usable photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) by a LED grow light, usually measured in μmol/J. The higher the efficacy, the more efficient the LED grow light is at converting electricity into usable light for plant growth.

LED grow light Efficacy is calculated by dividing the fixture PPF by the total fixture wattage consumed. For example, a 600W fixture with a maximum PPF of 1500 μmol/s will have the efficacy of 1500/600 = 2.5 μmol/j.

The efficacy between 2.5 and 2.8 is considered a good one. Some manufacturers state to achieve efficacy close to 3 and more, but currently, there are only a few LED chip manufacturers that can deliver such results and they are very pricy. So if the fixture is not expensive and states to have so high efficacy – you need to be very cautious if they are really truthful about the numbers as for any user is almost impossible to check it without proper equipment.

NOTE: LED light efficacy does not impact the quality of the yield. Using low-efficacy light you will have to use more electricity to deliver the same amount of yield compared to a higher-efficacy LED grow light.

PPFD (Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density) is a unit of measurement of the number of photons in the 400-700 nm range (PAR) that fall on a square meter per second. It is used to quantify the amount of light that plants can use for photosynthesis. In the context of LED grow lights, PPFD is used to evaluate the light output and quality of the LED grow lights. A higher PPFD value indicates that more photons are being emitted and the LED grow light is more efficient for plant growth.

It’s always recommended to use PAR meter to determine the wanted PPFD amount by adjusting the space between the plant’s canopy and the light. For example, if you have a very powerful 1000W LED light but you are not using CO2, so keeping a distance of 20-30cm from the plants will give too much light, so increasing the distance or using a dimming function can adjust to wanted levels.

NOTE: General rule of thumb, is that most of the plants need no more than 1500 μmol/m2/s without CO2 usage.

It’s recommended to keep at least 70cm / 27in, but for the best results use PAR (photosynthetically active radiation) meter to measure PPFD and adjust the height to optimal levels in any growth stage.
